PeV Cosmic Rays: A Window on the Leptonic Era?
نویسنده
چکیده
It is shown that a variety of characteristic features of the high-energy hadronic cosmic ray spectra, in particular the abrupt changes in the spectral index that occur around 3 PeV and 300 PeV, as well as the corresponding changes in elemental composition that are evident from kinks in the 〈Xmax〉 distribution, can be explained in great detail from interactions with relic Big Bang antineutrinos, provided that the latter have a rest mass of ∼ 0.5 eV/c.

Gamma Ray Bursts as Possible High Energy Sources
Gamma-ray bursts are known to be sources of high-energy γ rays, and are likely to be sources of high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. Following a short review of observations of GRBs at multi-MeV energies and above, the physics of leptonic and hadronic models of GRBs is summarized. Evidence for two components in BATSE and EGRET/TASC data suggest that GRBs are sources of high-energy cosmic rays...
متن کاملAir Shower Measurements in the Primary Energy Range from PeV to EeV
Recent results of advanced experiments with sophisticated measurements of cosmic rays in the energy range of the so called knee at a few PeV indicate a distinct knee in the energy spectra of light primary cosmic rays and an increasing dominance of heavy ones towards higher energies. This leads to the expectation of knee-like features of the heavy primaries at around 100 PeV. To investigate in d...

An analysis of arrival directions of extensive air showers (EAS) registered with the EAS MSU and EAS–1000 prototype arrays has revealed a region of excessive flux of PeV cosmic rays in the direction toward pulsars PSR J1840+5640 and LAT PSR J1836+5925 at significance level up to 4.5σ. The first of the pulsars was discovered almost 30 years ago and is a well-studied old radio pulsar located at t...
متن کاملOn Big Bang Relics, the Neutrino Mass and the Spectrum of Cosmic Rays
It is shown that high-energy features of the cosmic ray spectrum, in particular the kink around 4 PeV and the corresponding change in spectral index, may be explained from interactions between highly energetic cosmic protons and relic Big Bang antineutrinos, if the latter have a rest mass of about 0.4 eV/c. This explanation is supported by experimental data from extensive air-shower experiments...
متن کاملPropagation of Ultrahigh Energy Nuclei in Clusters of Galaxies: Resulting Composition and Secondary Emissions
We study the survival of ultrahigh energy nuclei injected in clusters of galaxies, as well as their secondary neutrino and photon emissions, using a complete numerical propagation method and a realistic modeling of the magnetic, baryonic and photonic backgrounds. It is found that the survival of heavy nuclei highly depends on the injection position and on the profile of the magnetic field. Taki...
